A New Perspective

I read a really interesting article this morning stating that a disproportionate number of people in creative vocations are left handed.

Today, I am attempting to complete everyday tasks using my left hand.  I will let you know if any life changing, astonishingly creative ideas come my way.  I must admit, running the computer mouse with my left hand is extremely challenging, slightly frustrating and very humorous.  You think I'm exaggerating?  Try it!  :)

  1. Day one of the Left handed Experiment.

Everything is slower albeit slightly off balance. I am feeling slightly nauseous. I had to resort to putting mascara on with my right hand for fear I would poke my eye out, but I did make the attempt. Eye liner was a different story... Eating was much slower and required a lot of concentration. I attempted to sign my name several times, my left handed writing is actually becoming more legible. Had trouble remembering what wrist my watch belonged on and while looking down at my wedding ring, I actually paused and wondered if I had it on the wrong finger. How funny!

No hugh revelations yet, but I am certainly looking at everything with different, slower, and questioning eyes.

I found the following exercise in an article written by Martha Beck, try this, I found the results really interesting. Pick up a pencil with your right hand and write "How's it going?" now pick up the pencil with your left hand and write whatever comes to mind. I am interested in hearing about your experience with this simple exercise. Cheers!

  2. Today I have an acute awareness of how many tasks we complete without thought. I am still feeling off balance and slightly dizzy.

  3. I believe the lesson is in the slowing down and really observing what you are creating, not letting the methodical side of your brain get in the way. The next time I am stuck, I will pick up the pencil with my left hand and allow myself the space to "see" what comes out!
